Ubuntu Freeze? Try Turning the Display Off and On Again

My Ubuntu setup hangs every time when left idle. This is apparently a very popular issue with about dozen suggestions including driver change, mess grub and even recompiling kernel. I tried them all and nothing worked. Today I simply turned the display on-off and voila, it works!
